Americans Spend More and Benefit Less on Health

In a study reported by Reuter’s News Agency last year (2010), Americans spend twice as much as residents of Britain, Canada, Germany, Holland, Australia and New Zealand on healthcare, but get lower quality, less efficiency and have the least equitable system.
In 2007, health spending was $7,290 per person in the United States, more than double that of any other country in the report.
The report looked at five measures of healthcare: quality, efficiency, access to care, equity and the ability to lead long, healthy, productive lives.

Britain ranked first in quality while the Netherlands (Holland) ranked first overall on all scores. American patients with chronic conditions were the most likely to say they received the wrong drug or had to wait to learn of abnormal test results.

Without the obvious case against how medicine is practiced in the U.S., why else would Americans spend more and receive less when it comes to their health? One answer proposed in the report is what we’ve been discussing for years… Lifestyle may very well be a big factor.

One example: Americans have higher rates of obesity than other developed countries. Americans also take more prescription drugs per capita than any of the other countries in the report. Too bad the study didn’t measure personal responsibility!

It’s clear that more drugs and more medical care are in most people’s future unless more personal responsibility is take to change to a healthier lifestyle…and the sooner, the better. Walking at a moderate pace for 30-60 minutes at a time burns stored fat and builds muscle, thereby increasing metabolism and weight loss. Saying “NO” to fast food improves overall nutrition and contributes to conscious eating. Two simple starters: What else could you do?

“My experience with the Purification Program was wonderful and an eye opener. The reason I decided to try the detox/cleanse was, with all my stress at work and trying to lose weight, Dr Heidi thought it would help. The first three days were the most challenging with no coffee. After getting through the no coffee, it went great. I was sleeping better, less stress at work and had a lot more energy. By day 21, I lost 25lbs and was feeling great. I have been adding some of my old food back into my eating habits and I’m finding out what my body does not like or need. Some of my old favorite foods taste good at the time, but the next day I feel like I have a hangover from drinking. I’m finding out that when I have a very stressful day at work, I stress eat and it doesn’t help. I feel even worse. I’m trying very hard not to get back into my very bad habit of eating the wrong foods, but it’s not easy. With Dr. Heidi’s help and strong will power I know I can keep on my goal of losing another 60- 70 lbs by this winter. I would definitely recommend that everyone try the Purification Program. If for nothing else, it’s an eye opener to how your body reacts to different types of foods.” Rick A. New Richmond, WI

Do You Smell Something Burning?

The family doctor of one of our patients tells him “there are 3 stages of pain. The first stage is when the pain is bad enough to catch your attention. The second stage is it takes hold of you, and at the third stage it finally compels you to do something about it.” So then my patient asks his doctor, “when it gets to stage three what should I do?” Without a blink his doctor turns to him and says “take some Motrin…” (True story)

The worst part of this story is this patient actually believed it was good advice. So I asked him “if your smoke detector went off in your home, the 1st time it would probably catch your attention. If it went off a 2nd time it would most likely take hold of you. But if it went off a 3rd time and finally compelled you to do something, would you take the batteries out of the smoke detector so you wouldn’t have to hear it anymore? “Of course not,” he replied “that would be stupid…” He got the point!

The moral of the story… Symptoms are your body’s attempt to heal itself. Masking your symptoms (whether it be pain, nausea, diarrhea or fever) with drugs isnʼt smart… it’s better to find the cause of the problem and correct it. That’s why they call Chiropractors “DC’s” because we are Doctors of finding the Cause!

Study Shows Chiropractic Care Benefits Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

(07/22/10 – Oakdale, MN) A small study group of children suffering from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, was put into chiropractic care for up to five months in a controlled research project, as reported in a recent issue of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.
Following the study, all of the participating children showed marked improvement in their condition.
“Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD as it is commonly known, is characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness,” said Oakdale-based Dr. Ben Smetana, D.C. “This problem must be diagnosed medically and is usually treated with a combination of psycho-therapy and prescription medication. This study gives hope for an alternative course of care.”
The subjects of this particular study—four male youths, ranging in age from 9- to 13-years old—began chiropractic care on a 3-times per week basis for eight weeks, then decreased frequency of visits to twice a week for eight weeks and, thereafter, once per week. The care consisted of spinal manipulation, with the addition of nutritional supplements.
During the course of the chiropractic care, results were checked using a 15-item, “ADHD Monitoring System Questionnaire,” which has been developed and approved by experts in the field to determine the efficacy of various methods of care. Parents and teachers complete the questionnaire periodically, and their responses are tabulated to show progress, or lack thereof.

According to the published case study,

Our retrospective case series observed continued improvement in only five months of [chiropractic] care. Regardless, this study provides supporting evidence that chiropractic may abate the symptoms of ADHD and may provide a complementary or alternative care approach to allopathic care approaches (i.e., stimulant medication). The chiropractic perspective in the care of patients with ADHD is not one of ‘all or none’ (i.e., care results in no effect or complete remission of ADHD), but rather the symptoms of ADHD are abated (i.e., ‘like a dimmer for the lights’) concomitant with improvement in spinal function.

“This study represents a very preliminary level of findings, and much more research is needed,” Dr. Smetana added. “But the results should offer some encouragement for parents of children with this problem.”
Anyone wishing more information may contact Dr. Smetana, whose office is located at 1015 Helmo Ave N. Oakdale, MN (telephone 651.739.2500).
