Do You Smell Something Burning?

The family doctor of one of our patients tells him “there are 3 stages of pain. The first stage is when the pain is bad enough to catch your attention. The second stage is it takes hold of you, and at the third stage it finally compels you to do something about it.” So then my patient asks his doctor, “when it gets to stage three what should I do?” Without a blink his doctor turns to him and says “take some Motrin…” (True story)

The worst part of this story is this patient actually believed it was good advice. So I asked him “if your smoke detector went off in your home, the 1st time it would probably catch your attention. If it went off a 2nd time it would most likely take hold of you. But if it went off a 3rd time and finally compelled you to do something, would you take the batteries out of the smoke detector so you wouldn’t have to hear it anymore? “Of course not,” he replied “that would be stupid…” He got the point!

The moral of the story… Symptoms are your body’s attempt to heal itself. Masking your symptoms (whether it be pain, nausea, diarrhea or fever) with drugs isnʼt smart… it’s better to find the cause of the problem and correct it. That’s why they call Chiropractors “DC’s” because we are Doctors of finding the Cause!

Study Shows Chiropractic Care Benefits Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

(07/22/10 – Oakdale, MN) A small study group of children suffering from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, was put into chiropractic care for up to five months in a controlled research project, as reported in a recent issue of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.
Following the study, all of the participating children showed marked improvement in their condition.
“Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD as it is commonly known, is characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness,” said Oakdale-based Dr. Ben Smetana, D.C. “This problem must be diagnosed medically and is usually treated with a combination of psycho-therapy and prescription medication. This study gives hope for an alternative course of care.”
The subjects of this particular study—four male youths, ranging in age from 9- to 13-years old—began chiropractic care on a 3-times per week basis for eight weeks, then decreased frequency of visits to twice a week for eight weeks and, thereafter, once per week. The care consisted of spinal manipulation, with the addition of nutritional supplements.
During the course of the chiropractic care, results were checked using a 15-item, “ADHD Monitoring System Questionnaire,” which has been developed and approved by experts in the field to determine the efficacy of various methods of care. Parents and teachers complete the questionnaire periodically, and their responses are tabulated to show progress, or lack thereof.

According to the published case study,

Our retrospective case series observed continued improvement in only five months of [chiropractic] care. Regardless, this study provides supporting evidence that chiropractic may abate the symptoms of ADHD and may provide a complementary or alternative care approach to allopathic care approaches (i.e., stimulant medication). The chiropractic perspective in the care of patients with ADHD is not one of ‘all or none’ (i.e., care results in no effect or complete remission of ADHD), but rather the symptoms of ADHD are abated (i.e., ‘like a dimmer for the lights’) concomitant with improvement in spinal function.

“This study represents a very preliminary level of findings, and much more research is needed,” Dr. Smetana added. “But the results should offer some encouragement for parents of children with this problem.”
Anyone wishing more information may contact Dr. Smetana, whose office is located at 1015 Helmo Ave N. Oakdale, MN (telephone 651.739.2500).

Symptomatic Whack-a-Mole

In the carnival game Whack-a-Mole, the object is to use a rubber mallet to hit as many critters as possible
when they pop up in random succession. Trouble is, as you hit one mole, three more pop up and disappear
before you can nail them all. Whack-a-Mole is a perfect example of how doctors medicate Americans today.
As soon as they prescribe one drug, three or more new symptoms pop up that require more drugs. In
fact, many of the drugs doctors prescribe are given to counteract the side effects of ones they already gave.
Sadly in their game, you end up on a ton of different drugs, for a bunch of different problems, with no actual
improvement in your health.
According to Generation Rx, in 2004 the number of prescription drugs used by the average American annually
was twelve. Data from FamiliesUSA.com show the average number of prescriptions taken per senior
citizen grew from 19.6 in 1992 to 28.5 in 2000, an increase of 45 percent. By 2010 the average number
of prescriptions per elderly person is projected to grow to 38.5, an increase of 10 prescriptions or 35 percent
per senior since 2000. Yet despite taking all these drugs, we embarrassingly rank 37th among the world’s
industrial countries when it comes to overall health!
In Chiropractic, health is not defined by how many symptoms you can temporarily ‘whack away’ with
medications, but how well your body can heal and function under its own Power. You have more healing
ability in your little finger than all the drug companies and hospitals in the world put together. Neither big
pharma nor modern medicine believes that, but Chiropractic does. If you maintain a clear nerve system, eat
right and get enough exercise, you’ll stay out of their failing whack-a-symptom game.
